Portsmouth Football Club is an English football club based in the city of Portsmouth. The city and hence the club are nicknamed Pompey, sometimes called 'The Blues', with fans known across Europe. The team play in the Football League Championship after being relegated from the Premier League after the 2009/10 season. Until then, Portsmouth had been a member of the Premier League for seven consecutive seasons.

During the recent 2009-10 season it became apparent to the club's new owner Balram Chainrai that the club was approximately £135m in debt so to protect the club from liquidation Balram Chainrai placed the club into administration on 26 February 2010, and the club appointed Andrew Andronikou, Peter Kubik and Michael Kiely of accountancy firm UHY Hacker Young as administrators. This automatically incurred the club a nine point penalty in the league which came into effect on 17 March 2010 which meant certain relegation. However despite the upheaval with players being sold and unpaid the team still managed to reach the Final of the FA Cup losing 1-0 to Chelsea. On 17 June 2010 the club's creditors voted for a Company Voluntary Agreement (CVA) and barring any appeals should exit administration in time for the new 2010-11 season.

Portsmouth have been champions of England twice, in 1949 and 1950, and have won the FA Cup twice, most recently in 2008 beating Welsh side Cardiff City 1–0 in the final. In terms of trophies won, the club is the most successful southern club outside of London, historically. Home matches have been played at Fratton Park since the club's formation in 1898.
